TITLE: Acceptable (155 Word Vignette/Challenge Response)

The drumming of his father’s nicotine stained fingers on the desk was enough to drive Jeffrey mad.

Young Jeffrey had given his father his report card, and now the older man was eyeing it carefully, taking in each mark and comment as though the fate of the world depended upon his scrutiny.

Jeffrey suddenly realized why all of those military men acted so nervous around him.  Why his mother would often cease arguing with just one glance from his father.

A shudder went through Jeffrey’s body, and his father looked up at him.

“Acceptable,” was all he said before tossing the report card towards his son, and taking a long drag of his Morley.

Jeffrey took the report card from the desk, “Thank you, Sir.”

He wondered how other Dads reviewed report cards.  Were there proud hugs, ice cream sundaes, extra allowance?

Jeffrey didn’t know. For now he would have to be grateful for “Acceptable.”

CSM: Nothing vanishes without a trace...burn it!
